Good morning, Mendips! It's Friday, it's Halloween weekend and the whole patch has gone a bit spooky. Today we've got a Street goalkeeper heading for England, an overnight ghost hunt in a Victorian brewery and a very smart graduation in Wells Cathedral. There's a Weekend Planner full of candlelight crooning, zombies and Grandmaster Flash, plus a walk in Cranmore Woods with a ghostly keeper and vanishing mushrooms. Grab a cuppa and have a read.
What Shall We Do For The Weekend?
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, so the Mendips has gone properly spooky. Whether you fancy a bit of crooning, a bit of scratching or a bit of screaming, here's how we'd spend it.
🎶 Friday night is all about the music. Start with a touch of class: Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons by Candlelight fills Wells Cathedral with tribute-act falsetto from 7.30pm. If you'd rather shimmy than swoon, SkABBA at Bishop Sutton Village Hall mashes up ska with ABBA's greatest hits from 8pm (ages 14 and over, ticketed).

SkABBA at Bishop Sutton Village Hall
🎃 Saturday is the big spooky day. Spend the daytime at Wookey Hole, where the caves have witch projections, a pumpkin trail and the Monster's Ball circus show, all included in a standard ticket. At 5pm, head to Glastonbury for the Glastonbury Zombie Walk, a free procession along Magdalene Street and the High Street with Dragon Drummers, Morris dancers and Devito's Circus. Roads close from 4pm to 8pm, so park sensibly. Then, if you're 18 or over and feeling brave, there's the ghost hunt at Shepton Mallet's Victorian brewery, from 8pm until 2am. It's £55, there are séances and Ouija boards, and the floors are uneven, so wear sensible shoes.
🎸 Sunday is the gentle comedown. Head to Castle Cary for Rob Heron & Conrad Bird at Caryford Hall, an afternoon of country, gypsy swing, rockabilly and folk. Tickets are £12 in advance.
Whatever you pick, have a smashing weekend. Today's and tomorrow's full listings are just below.

⚽ Street goalkeeper earns England call-up after 3,000-mile move
Ash Hughes, 17, a goalkeeper at Millfield in Street, has won her first England futsal call-up, to under-19 camps in October and November. She moved 3,000 miles to chase her football dream and gave up playing for Bermuda to follow an England pathway, with no guarantee of a place. Her long-term aim is the Women's Super League. Futsal, in case you wondered, is five-a-side indoor football with a smaller, less bouncy ball.
👻 Shepton's Victorian brewery opens for Halloween ghost hunt

Swapping lager for spirits at Shepton
Ghost Hunt Events is running an overnight, over-18s-only ghost hunt at the former Anglo-Bavarian Brewery on Commercial Road, Shepton Mallet, on Saturday 31 October from 8pm until 2am. Expect small-group vigils, séances and Ouija boards. Tickets are £55, the floors are uneven and slippery, and it isn't suitable for anyone with limited mobility, so wrap up warm and wear flat shoes.
🎆 Worth planning for: Shepton Mallet Rotary Fireworks
Next Saturday, 7 November, the Rotary bonfire night fireworks light up the sky over West Shepton Playing Fields on Old Wells Road. Gates open at 6.15pm. Tickets are £6 for adults, £3 for children aged 5 to 15 and £18 for a family, and under-5s go free. One rule to remember: please leave your own sparklers and fireworks at home. Tickets are on the Rotary ticket page.

A Keeper, a Phantom and a Lawyer's Wig:
Halloween in Cranmore Woods
If you want a dog walk with a bit of a shiver this Halloween weekend, Cranmore Woods has it all: a lonely tower, a ghost who may have posed for his own statue, and mushrooms that melt away overnight. It even sits beside a school called All Hallows.

The tower and its keeper
Cranmore Tower rises out of the beeches on the hill above Cranmore. It's a 45-metre Italianate folly, built in 1862–64 by architect Thomas Henry Wyatt for John Moore Paget of Cranmore Hall. At 280 metres above sea level, it marks the highest point on the whole Mendip Way. In the Second World War the Home Guard used it as a lookout.
Roman remains and a coin hoard were reportedly found beside it in the 1980s. Then there's its resident. According to Somerset and Bath Paranormal, people report a fleeting male figure inside, thought to be a former tower keeper. Oddly, a small statue in an alcove on the outside wall is said to look just like him. Which came first, nobody can say. The tower is now private and closed, but a public footpath passes close by and it looks suitably spooky through the trees at dusk.

Cranmore Tower
The name of All Hallows, the prep school at Cranmore Hall, is pure coincidence: the school started in Bognor Regis in 1938 and brought the name with it. Still, how many walks pass All Hallows at Halloween?
The vanishing mushrooms
Mendiplodocus reader John East, a keen photographer since he was 13 and now 79, explored the fungi in Cranmore Woods recently with a Nikon Z8, a 105mm macro lens and a tripod. "I wasn't too disappointed," he says, and his pictures below prove it. Most are focus-stacked, blending 50 to 100 shots into one sharp image. "It sounds simple," he says, "but it isn't!"
His star find is the Shaggy Inkcap, also known as the Lawyer's Wig, and it's the perfect Halloween fungus. It starts as a tall, white, scaly column, then within hours its gills turn pink, then black, and the cap dissolves into an inky liquid. People have even used it to write with. It's the mushroom that writes its own ghost story and then disappears.

Folklore links rings of mushrooms with fairies, witches and even the Devil, who, as regular readers know, gets everywhere on Mendip.
Making a weekend of it
Start from the small, unsigned woodland car park for five or six cars off the lane between Waterlip and Chantry. A track reaches the tower in about 20 minutes, and a three-kilometre dog-friendly circuit makes a good hour out. Expect mud after rain, and it gets dark early now, so set off in good time unless you fancy meeting the keeper.
Keep dogs away from fungi, as many are poisonous, and leave the mushrooms for the next photographer. Do you know which fungi are in John's other pictures below? Hit reply and tell us.
